The Catholic Theological Faculty was one of Charles University s four original faculties. Its establishment was a special mark of favour on the part of Pope Clement VI who granted permission for the new institution to have a theological faculty. The condition for study was graduation from the Faculty of Free Arts. The theological faculty ceased to exist during the Hussite Revolution and was not renewed even when the Hussite Wars ended. At this time the Catholic clergy was educated at the revived Cathedral School of St. Vitus.

Deeper and comprehensive theological studies were only revived in the later part of the 16th century, when the Jesuits settled in Prague and set up a philosophical-theological academy which later obtained the right to award degrees. Following the Battle of the White Mountain the Jesuits took over the running of the entire university in 1622. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 members of other orders and diocesan priests occupied professorial posts. When the university was divided into separate Czech and German institutions in 1882, the Theological Faculty remained common to both for further 9 years, and was only divided at the turn of the year 1891/92.

The disastrous events of the Autumn of 1939 hit the theological faculty as hard as the other institutions of higher education. Immediately after the liberation in 1945 the faculty resumed its activities and continued with them until 1950 when it was excluded from Charles University; it was moved to Litoměřice where it operated under the changed name of the Roman Catholic Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty. In 1990 it was reincorporated into Charles University.

The main task of the Catholic Theological Faculty is the training of experts in theology and philosophy. From the point of view of Canon Law the faculty considers itself subordinate to the Archbishop of Prague, who is also Chancellor of the University, and the Papal Congregation for Catholic Education.

Graduates of the full-time regular five-year master s programme must obtain the permission of the bishop before they can enter the service of the diocese and become Catholic priests. Graduates of the combined study programme are qualified for careers in Church institutions and cultural life. Teacher-training students take four-year combined studies.

The Protestant Theological Faculty was established by a law of the Czechoslovak Republic of the 8th of April 1919 and was originally called the Huss Czechoslovak Evangelical Faculty of Theology. It was an independent faculty, outside Charles University, but enjoying all the rights and liberties of an institution of higher education. It also provided education training for those wishing to enter the ministry and for future ministers of the reformed church in Slovakia. From 1922, women were also accepted as students of the faculty.

After February 1948 the theological faculty was reorganised and divided into two faculties: the Czechoslovak Church Faculty, which retained the name of Hus, and the Comenius Evangelical Theological Faculty for Protestant churches. After August 1968 the faculty found itself in a difficult position; it came under the control of state organs and its ecumenical links with the outside world were seriously curtailed. November 1989 brought calls for the incorporation of the faculty into the Charles University and this was implemented in May 1990. The faculty adopted the name of the Protestant Theological Faculty of Charles University.

The faculty cultivates Evangelical theological studies and trains men and women for preaching and spiritual work. It builds on Czech reformation traditions as represented by Hussite theology and the teaching of the Czech Brethren, in an effort to cultivate an ecumenical tradition. The work of the faculty contributes to deepening the spiritual and moral life of individuals and society as a whole.

The faculty s main purpose is to train experts for Protestant churches, as theologians in the Master s programme, and as teachers and pastoral and social workers in the Bachelor programme.

The faculty co-operates with similar institutions abroad, and its Centre for Biblical Studies collaborates with the Czech Academy of Sciences. The faculty is also the home of the Ecumenical Institute, which organises contacts with faculties and ecumenical movements abroad, collaborates with the other international ecumenical institutes and primarily serves students from abroad.

The Hussite Theological Faculty has been one of the three university theological faculties since 1990. It is oriented towards ecumenical theology in a Hussite spirit. The educational activity of the faculty is devoted principally to preparing students for ministry in the Hussite church and churches that cooperate with it.

In one of its programmes the faculty trains students for teaching in fields related to Hussite theology. The doctoral study programmes involve both normative, interdisciplinary and historical research on the teachings of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church.

Studies at the faculty (master s programme, either in a single subject or a combination of two subjects) are open to all without regard to denomination, gender, race, political affiliation or view of the world. The faculty offers a social pedagogy programme, specialist training for the teaching profession, and is also a place where it is possible to study Orthodox theology.

The Faculty of Law was founded in 1348 and is therefore one of the four original faculties of Charles University. In 1372-1419 the Faculty of Law established itself an independent university of jurists but ceased to operate after the Hussite Wars, although law was sometimes the subject of lectures in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. Nevertheless, in the period of the rule of the Estates, the Czech legal profession enjoyed a great upsurge.

Legal sciences developed significantly in the last century, and did so at the Czech Faculty of Law that emerged after the division of the Charles-Ferdinand university into two separate institutions (one with Czech and one with German as teaching language). After 1918 The Law Faculty actively joined in the development of the First Republic as a state based on law. A series of important Czechoslovak experts in jurisprudence lectured there.

The faculty provides university education in the field of law, in the form of regular, postgradual, and life-long education. Postgraduate studies are arranged at the Institute for the Further Education of Lawyers JURIDIKUM.

The First Medical Faculty has been a part of Charles University since its foundation in 1348 and is the oldest medical faculty in Central Europe. The Medical Faculty was training medical students and awarding the academic degrees of Bachelor and Master of Medicine up to approximately the 1420s. The Hussite Wars interrupted the activities of the Medical Faculty and these were not resumed for almost 200 years. In the interim period lectures on medical themes were sporadically given in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. Teaching in the Medical Faculty was revived in 1623 and the first degrees of doctor of medicine were already being awarded in the winter of 1624.

Originally, teaching in the faculty was purely theoretical, and it was only from 1740 that students were advised to visit hospitals, and subsequently clinical lectures were instituted. These were first held in the hospital U Hybernů, and later in the General Hospital which was founded in 1790. In 1882 the Medical Faculty (like the whole university) was divided between German and Czech institutions. After the Nazis closed the Czech universities in 1939, the faculty managed to maintain some activity at least in the award of degrees at Oxford University (1943 1944).

After the war the Medical Faculty took over the institutes and clinics of the former German Medical Faculty in Prague and rapidly revived. The year 1945 also saw the foundation of branches of the faculty in Pilsen and Hradec Kralove, which were soon themselves to become independent medical faculties of Charles University. The Prague Medical Faculty was called the Faculty of General Medicine. Since 1990, in view of its historical tradition, it has carried the name The 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University.

The basic purpose of the faculty is to train medical doctors in such a way as to provide them with a broad general medical education, and a thorough theoretical basis, so that they are able to think and communicate scientifically and medically, and offer basic medical care. In addition, the faculty has introduced bachelor studies in various fields. Graduates in these areas can find a range of employment both in and outside the health sector, e.g. in rehabilitation and psychiatric facilities, labour offices etc.

The 1st Medical Faculty trains both future medical doctors and dentists. Bachelor studies are available in the fields of nursing, ergotherapy, physiotherapy, health education and health technology. Nursing and health technology study programmes are also offered on master s level.

The faculty came into existence as an independent faculty of paediatric medicine in 1953 when paediatrics was separated off from what was then the Faculty of General Medicine. Since 1990, when major changes in the content and style of studies took place, the faculty has been known as the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University.

Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of the relations between health and disease from the pre-natal to the mature stage of human life. Graduates of the faculty are equipped for careers in any branch of medicine. They are well prepared especially for careers in family medicine, but also for specialised paediatric fields and other areas where a continuous and dynamic developmental view of the patient is essential.

Studies at the 2nd Medical Faculty may only be undertaken on a full-time basis in the field of general medicine, and take six years. Theoretical and preclinical subjects are studied from the first to the fourth year in the institutes of the faculty, and clinical subjects are studied from the fourth to the sixth years in the faculty hospital complex at Motol and other health facilities in Prague. Specialisation in individual medical fields is mainly the subject of postgraduate training.

In addition, the faculty offers a three-year programme of bachelor studies in the field of physiotherapy. Graduates in this field can find work in rehabilitation centres, clinics etc. in the state and private sector.

The 3rd Medical Faculty of Charles University was separated from the Faculty of General Medicine in 1953 as an independent Medical Faculty of Hygiene, which then specialised in problems of hygiene and preventive medicine. Its roots, however, can be traced to the first medical faculty which has been one of the four faculties of Charles University since its foundation. In 1990 the faculty developed a new study programme and a revised conception of studies, which emphasised a primary orientation toward general medicine while retaining a specific interest in preventive care.

The location of the 3rd Medical Faculty in the complex of the Faculty Hospital in Královské Vinohrady in Prague 10, and in the immediate vicinity of the State Health Institute means that students can be offered a very wide range of experience in specialist centres and clinics.

Study programmes and degrees awarded

The faculty offers the following study programmes and awards the following degrees:

Bachelor Study Programme

Leading, after the State Final Examination, to the award of the title Bachelor , abbreviated to Bc. .

Master s Study Programme

Leading, after the State Doctoral Examination, to the award of the title Doctor of Medicine , abbreviated to MUDr. .

Doctoral Study Programme

Leading, after the State Doctoral (PhD) Examination, to the award of the title Doctor , abbreviated to Ph.D. .

The curricula of the 3rd Medical Faculty are in line with the Recommendations on Undergraduate Medical Education adopted by the advisory committee of the Commission of the European Union in October 1992. The master s study programme lasts for 6 years, with the first two years devoted to basic sciences, the third year to pre-clinical subjects and the fourth to the sixth year to clinical practice. This division is not absolute, since from the second year students come into contact with patients. Preventive medicine is included in both types of training, theoretical and clinical. From the third to the fifth year students can choose, apart from their study plan, from approximately 70 courses useful for any medical programme. This optional part of studies represents around 10% of the overall study load. In the sixth year, after specialisation in a particular category (general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology or preventive medicine), the students take their state examinations.

Studies in the field of general medicine with an orientation to preventive medicine are always undertaken on a six-year, exclusively full-time basis. Bachelor studies are offered at the faculty in the fields of physiotherapy, public health and healthcare sciences. The last course is aimed at candidates from secondary vocational health schools who have a minimum of two years of work experience.

Over the centuries the study of pharmaceutics has undergone many developments and organisational changes. The Charles University Pharmaceutical Faculty in Hradec Kralove draws on a centuries-old tradition of the study of pharmacy reaching back to the very beginning of Prague university (for example, from the founding of the university in 1348 the apothecaries of the Prague towns became members of the university community by swearing an oath to the rector and being registered on the university roll).

The independent Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1969 on the basis of a government decree. Graduates of its pharmacy programme are qualified for work in pharmaceutical research, production, management and distribution, in biochemical laboratories, pharmaceutical training centres and other healthcare facilities. Graduates of its healthcare bio-analytics programme can be employed in chemical laboratories, transfusion stations and healthcare institutions.

The basis of medieval university education was the faculty of free arts (the arts faculty), which cultivated what was known as the trivium (grammar, rhetoric and didactics) and the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music) at a higher level. Only after graduation from this faculty did some students decide to continue at the specialised faculties which were the other components of the university. The Faculty of Arts [also known as the Philosophical Faculty] of Charles University was established in 1348. For centuries, right up to the middle of the last century, it fulfilled the role of a faculty that prepared students for the other faculties, and every university trained student had to graduate from it. It can be said that its history is, in a certain sense, the history of the entire university.

The structure of the faculty has changed in the course of centuries, and today it is one of the largest of the university s faculties.

Bachelor, master and doctoral courses are offered in over 100 disciplines (single and combined); there are sixteen departments, close to 30 institutes and over 40 specialist libraries. The faculty carries out teaching and research in philological, philosophical, historical, educational, political, social and psychological fields, and also in librarianship and information studies, and in academic disciplines relating to culture and the arts.

In addition to providing regular university and postgraduate studies the faculty also cultivates various types and forms of life-long education.

Study programmes and degrees awarded

The faculty offers the following study programmes and awards the following academic degrees:

Bachelor Study Programme

Leading, after the State Final Examination, to the award of the title Bachelor , abbreviated to Bc. .

Master s Study Programme

Leading, after the State Final Examination, to the award of the title Magister , abbreviated to Mgr. . Leading, after the State Doctoral Examination, to the award of the title Doctor of Philosophy , abbreviated to PhDr. .

Doctoral Study Programme

Leading, after the State Doctoral (PhD) Examination, to the award of the title Doctor , abbreviated to Ph.D.

Students registered for single-subject master s courses may take the bachelor degree after 3 or 4 years. Students on the master s study programme complete their studies by defending a degree dissertation and taking state final examinations in their main subjects of study. The master s study programmes are organised in two cycles. The 1st cycle (4 6 semesters) is completed by an interim examination (the equivalent of a bachelor s examination), and the 2nd cycle is completed by a state final examination and submission of a degree dissertation. Doctoral studies usually take 3 years (full-time study) or 5 years (part-time study). Students must produce and defend doctoral thesis and take doctoral examinations.

Important note: all the study programmes may be modified and are newly announced for each academic year. The study programmes and subjects available can be found on each faculty s Internet pages.

From the founding of the university, natural sciences, together with mathematics, were studied mainly in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, with a few aspects of biology and chemistry being studied in the Medical Faculty. Natural sciences found a favourable environment in Prague over the centuries, but it was at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries that the great expansion and growing specialisation of the natural sciences led to pressure to establish an independent natural sciences faculty at the university. However, it was not until 1920 that the Natural Sciences Faculty was set up by government decree, with mathematics, natural sciences and pharmacy being separated off from the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. The fifth faculty of Charles University had emerged.

This promising development was violently halted by the German occupation and the closure of all universities. The communist coup in 1948 brought negative interference in the activities of the Natural Sciences Faculty. In 1952 the faculty was organisationally divided into the Biology, Geology and Geography, and Mathematics and Physics Faculties. This division lasted only until 1959, when the Natural Sciences Faculty was established anew but without mathematics and physics which remained at the already independent Mathematics and Physics Faculty.

The present structure of the faculty dates from after the revolution of 1989. The faculty is academically and organisationally divided into four sections: biological, geographical, geological and chemical. In addition to these sections the faculty has several specialist teaching and research centres, including interdisciplinary institutions such as the Centre for Environmental Questions. All parts of the faculty are active in both teaching and research.

All bachelor and master s programmes include both theoretical teaching and practical exercises in laboratories, and some courses combine academic studies of natural science with teacher training in the chosen field.

Bachelor courses are introductions to deeper studies that follow on in the master s programmes. Graduates of bachelor programmes can teach in secondary schools.

Master s study programmes train experts for scientific and research institutes, government careers, industry and the private sector. Graduates of the master s courses with teacher training element are qualified to teach in secondary schools and secondary vocational schools.

Doctoral study programmes train highly specialised staff for science and research activities.

Mathematical sciences and astronomy have been studied at Charles University since the period of its foundation. At that time these subjects were part of basic studies in the Faculty of Arts, the predecessor of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. In the modern period the Natural Sciences Faculty was created by separation from the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy in 1920, and was later divided itself, in 1952, creating the Mathematics and Physics Faculty. In the 16th century practical works of mathematics and astronomy had begun to appear, including textbooks written in Czech and popular guides. The growing intensity of the movement for national rebirth in the 19th century found expression in the creation of Czech specialist scientific literature; natural science clubs and societies were founded (for example the Union of Czech Mathematicians in 1862).

The Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague was founded in 1946 by a decree of the President of the Czechoslovak Republic. Today the Faculty of Education, in accordance with its 1991 statutes, is a professionally oriented institution concerned with the whole spectrum of education in society from pre-school education to adult education. Its graduates find careers as teachers in nursery schools, elementary schools, secondary and high schools and in educational research institutions. The Faculty of Education also trains teachers and experts for care of the disabled. The Institute of Educational and Psychological Research at the faculty is the only university research centre in this field in the Czech Republic.

The faculty offers bachelor s and master s degrees. The masters study programmes for the training of secondary school teachers offer the following specialistions: Czech language and literature, music education, choirmastership for church music, teaching of musical instruments, art, civic education, physical education, education, educational psychology, history, mathematics, chemistry, biology, principles of technology, English, French, German and Russian. To obtain the master s degree, students must study two subjects in combinations which are provided in each year.

Studies at the Faculty of Education conclude with a state final examination, part of which is the defense of a degree dissertation.

In addition to ordinary master s courses the faculty also offers courses leading to teaching certificates for students who have already obtained academic degrees without a teacher training element, and also offers courses for teachers to extend their qualifications to include other subjects. Both these types of study are organised purely as part-time studies lasting from 3 to 6 semesters.

The faculty is accredited to offer postgraduate doctoral studies in 5 areas: psychology, pedagogics, philosophy, historical sciences, and specialization in pedagogics. These studies are either full-time (three years) or external usually taking five years.

This is one of the most recent faculties of Charles University. It developed out of the Institute of Physical Education that became part of the university in 1959, and became a full faculty in 1965. Its present form was established at the beginning of the 1960s. The faculty s purpose is to educate and train professionals for work in physical education, sports, recreation and rehabilitation.

It is the only centre in the Czech Republic currently offering the entire range of university studies in the area of physical education. In the field of sport, it is licensed to provide qualifications for trainers at various levels.

It offers a degree in Higher Secondary School Teaching as a combined twosubject degree organised with another faculty. Physical education can be combined with biology, geography and chemistry (at the Faculty of Natural Sciences), English and psychology (at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy), mathematics (with the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics) and English and French (at the Faculty of Education). It also offers a degree in physical education and work training for the physically disabled, designed for the disabled themselves and for people working with them.

The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport not only trains teachers of physical education but is also a university research and teaching institution in the field of rehabilitation physiotherapy. Most graduates in this field pursue careers as therapists in the health service.

Postgraduate doctoral studies are academic/scientific in character, and can be pursued in the accredited fields of kinanthropology (the anthropology of movement) and biomechanics.
