Erasmus programme: if it’s the Czech Republic, then Charles University

Charles University in Prague continues to be the most popular destination for university students from abroad taking part in the Erasmus programme. In the 2012–2013 academic year more than 1,300 foreign students studied at 17 university faculties as part of the exchange programme, putting Charles University in 7th place amongst the thousands of universities taking part in the Erasmus programme, according to figures published by the European Commission.


The greatest level of interest in study at Charles University was shown by students from Germany, France, Spain and Poland. Students most often study at the CU Faculties of Arts and Law, the 1st Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Social Sciences, with languages, political science, history, economics, law, medicine and geography being the most popular subjects. Students of Charles University most frequently went to study in Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain. The Scandinavian countries in particular are also gaining in popularity.


In the 2012-2013 academic year more than 7,000 Czech university students were given the chance to study abroad through the Erasmus programme, with nearly 6,500 students coming to study at Czech universities. During this academic year more than 1,300 foreign students were accepted by Charles University as part of the Erasmus programme, maintaining its long-held position as the most popular destination amongst Czech universities.


In the last academic year the Erasmus programme saw almost 270,000 students and more than 52,000 teachers travel abroad. As in the past, Czech students most frequently went to study in Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain. The greatest number of foreign students at Czech universities came from Spain, France, Turkey, Poland, Slovakia and Germany.


The Erasmus programme was founded in 1987 and has helped more than three million European students study abroad in the twenty-seven years since.
