CLS Summer '18: Law and Technology

GDPR. Cyber crime. International financial markets.

Online trolls and the future of democracy.

Cyber bullying. Electronic warfare. Covert surveillance. The future of law…

If all of this sounds as though it might interest you, read on.

This summer, from July 16th-22nd,

high in the Giant Mountains, the Common Law Society will hold its Summer School.

The School, a fixture in the summer calendar since 2012,

will this year focus on the theme of law and technology.

Students will be led this year through various topics focusing on the interaction of law and technology in European, international, and comparative law. Classes will show how technology has changed law substantively, and the way in which law is used in practice. Topics will range from the concrete consequences of the EU’s data protection reforms, to online privacy and harassment, to state and private surveillance, to the impact of technology on international markets and the laws of war The programme itself consists of a specialization course, guest lectures, discussion panels and a student interaction.

Every morning, a team of lecturers, led by Prof. Dr. Ciarán Burke (University of Jena and the Irish Law Reform Commission) and Dr. Zuzana Vikarska (Masaryk University of Brno) will provide an overview of key specialist topics related to cutting edge areas of the law, providing students with key knowledge and offering an opportunity for exchanges of views.

In the afternoon, this will be followed by guest lecturers, who will speak about topics of which they have practical experience. These will include:

· Jan Passer, judge of the General Court of the European Union

· Radim Polčák, head of the Institute of Law and Technology department of Masaryk University

· David Murray, former European head of FX trading for Virtu Financial, one of the largest and most successful electronic market making firms in the world

· Jack Nea, Legal Research Manager for the Courts Service of Ireland

· Zdeněk Kučera, guarantor of Law and Informatics and Law and Business at the Faculty of Information Technology of the Czech Technical University.

…with more to be confirmed.

These experts will share their insights, their knowledge, and their time with the students, and will facilitate discussion and interaction.

But it’s not all about the learning. There is also a strong non-academic dimension of this summer school: students are, as always, invited to participate in various trips and sports, to use the wellness equipment of the chalet (including a sauna and whirlpool) and to enjoy the free evenings, getting to know their fellow students and the lecturers. A caring organising team will be there for you, helping to create a unique and friendly atmosphere.

The deadline application is on June 1st.
