prof. PhDr. Ing. Jan Royt, Ph.D.

Professor Royt is one of the founding fathers of the Institute of Christian Art History at the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University. As a token of appreciation for his activities at the Catholic Theological Faculty, he received a St Adalbert (Vojtěch) Gold Medal from the Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal Dominik Duka, in 2009. In 2000, he was accepted as a member of Görres Gesellschaft, a prestigious foreign organization (Germany). From 2006 to 2014, he was the director of the Institute of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. He is interested in old art dating from the early Christian era until the end of the Baroque period. He specializes in the painting of the Medieval Period, and in Christian iconography. As a co-author, he has participated in a number of international as well as domestic exhibition projects (e.g. St John of Nepomuk 1393–1993, Master Theodoric, Charles IV, Emperor by the Grace of God, Gothic Art in West Bohemia, the Glory of the Baroque Bohemia, and Images of Beauty and Salvation).
