What Researchers Need in an English Academic World

Designed especially for new Ph.D. students and researchers just starting in their careers, this 3-hour interactive workshop will help develop some of the skills you need in an ever-evolving and competitive English academic environment. We will look at how to strengthen your communication and networking skills and how to interact at events such as conferences. We will also focus on how to talk about your science in different contexts so that you can better position yourself in the academic world.

    Networking & interacting at conferences:

    • language to introduce yourself for both formal and informal occasions

    • how to introduce yourself to a presenter

    • introducing yourself to a group of people

    • safe topics and taboos topics when socializing

    Talking about your science:

    • language in a formal presentation vs. a poster presentation

    • communicating to a specialist vs. non-specialist

    • how to “sell” yourself and your research
