Going Native | |
Czech history is not only about Charles the IV, the founder of our University. On September 28, we celebrate the Feast of St. Wenceslas ('Svatý Václav'), Duke of Bohemia, who was cruelly murdered by his brother, Boleslaus the Cruel. Thanks to his martyrdom and the popularity of several biographies extolling his reputation for heroic virtue, Wenceslas was posthumously proclaimed the king and patron of the Czech state and nation. That's why we celebrate Czech Statehood Day on St. Wenceslas Day. Nowadays, you can find many a depiction of St. Wenceslas all around you. For instance, in your wallet on the 20 CZK coin or in the form of an equestrian statue at the top of Wenceslas Square. You may have already heard the Good King Wenceslas Christmas carol that actually tells the story of our Wenceslas's virtues. If not, you can listen to it in English here and if you feel confident in your Czech, then see here. For other famous Czech traditional song praising the St. Wenceslas, see, e.g., this classical arrangement or its modern version by Omnion. |
