Under section 36 (2) of Act No. 111/1998 Sb., to regulate higher education institutions and to change and amend other laws (the Higher Education Act), the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports registered the Rules for Awarding Medals of Charles University under ref. n. MSMT-14 975/2000 on 13 March 2000.
Under section 36 (2) and (5) of the Higher Education Act, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports registered the amendments to the Rules for Awarding Medals of Charles University under ref. n. MSMT-21033/2015, on 15 June 2015 and under ref. n. MSMT-38084/2016 on 14 December 2016.

Under sections 9 (1) (b) and 17 (1) (k) of Act No. 111/1998 Sb., to regulate higher education institutions and to change and amend other laws (“the Higher Education Act”), as amended, and under Article 61 (2) of the Constitution of Charles University the Academic Senate of Charles University has adopted the following Rules for Awarding Medals of Charles University as an internal regulation:
These Rules regulate the awarding of memorial medals (“medals”) of Charles University (“the University”) and medals of faculties to members of the academic community of the University along with other persons who have played an important role in the development of the University or its faculty, or in the development of science, learning, or academic freedom1.
University medals are awarded in two degrees:
a. |
gold; |
b. |
silver. |
The University also awards:
a. |
the Historical medal of the University; |
b. |
special medals for specific occasions if so provided by the Rector. |
One degree of these medals is awarded.
The Rector’s office keeps records of the University medals awarded in a special register according to serial numbers and the degrees of medals.
Three copies of each model of the University medals awarded are permanently deposited in the archives of the University.
Proposals for awarding a University medal containing the degree and reasoning may be submitted by:
a. |
the Academic Senate of the University; |
b. |
the Rector; |
c. |
the Research Board of the University; |
d. |
the Chief Financial Officer of the University; |
e. |
the academic senate of a faculty; |
f. |
the dean of a faculty; |
g. |
the research board of a faculty; |
h. |
the director of another unit of the University; |
i. |
the research board of a university institute of the University. |
The Rector decides on the awarding of a University medal.
University medals are awarded on behalf of the University by the Rector, or a Vice-Rector designated by him, in a ceremony. A diploma on the awarding of the medal is presented at the same time.
Faculty medals are usually awarded in one degree.
The dean’s office keeps records of the faculty medals awarded in a special register of the faculty.
Three copies of each model of faculty medals awarded are permanently deposited in the archives of the University.
Proposals for awarding a faculty medal containing a reasoning may be submitted by:
a. |
the academic senate of the faculty; |
b. |
the dean; |
c. |
the research board of the faculty; |
d. |
the faculty secretary; |
e. |
the head of a faculty unit. |
The dean decides on the awarding of a faculty medal.
Faculty medals are awarded on behalf of the faculty by the dean, or a vice-dean designated by him, in a ceremony. A diploma on the awarding of the medal is presented at the same time.
These Rules were approved by the Academic Senate of the University on 28 January 2000.
These Rules come into force on the date of registration by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports2.
The Code becomes effective on the first day of the calendar month following the date of coming into force.

The change in the Rules for Awarding Medals of Charles University (the first change) was approved by the Academic Senate of Charles University in Prague on 15 May 2015. This change came into force on the date of registration by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, which was completed on 15 May 2015, and became effective on 1 July 2015.
The change in the Rules for Awarding Medals of Charles University in Prague (the second change) was approved by the Academic Senate of Charles University on 25 November 2016. This change came into force on the date of registration by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, which was completed on 14 December 2016, and became effective on the first day of the calendar month following the date of its legal force.
