At the invitation of CU Rector Milena Králíčková, the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited Charles University on Thursday, 6 February 2025. Together they discussed the possibilities of deepening cooperation between Charles University and the University of Coimbra. They shared their experiences and views on the current situation in Europe and the world.

Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences are expanding their partnership. According to an addendum to the cooperation agreement signed by the rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková, and the president of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Eva Zažímalová, the two institutions will jointly implement the amendment to the Act on Higher Education in support for doctoral students.

Charles University has secured, as part of a consortium led by the Utrecht University, funding for an ambitious project called „Colonial Legacies of Universities: Materialities and New Collaborations“ (COLUMN). The first phase will be coordinated by Prof. Markéta Křížová from the Centre for Ibero-American Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.

This week's release of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 by Subject confirmed that Charles University is still one of the world's leading universities. In the 10 disciplines in which it was ranked, CU defended its top position in the Czech Republic, while in economics and humanities it is among the top 200 worldwide. In economics, psychology and social sciences, it improved on the previous edition.

Charles University is the only applicant from the Czech Republic to receive CZK 60 million for its Charleston project under the EU's flagship programme for doctoral and post-doctoral education. The aim to support young scientists who have already obtained their PhD and have previous international experience, whose research will focus on crucial sustainability issues.

The Mathematics for Czechia Endowment Fund and Charles University have jointly declared that they recognise alarming facts involving the decline of mathematics teachers in the Czech Republic and see the need to urgently begin to address this problem. That is why this week the institutions signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in which they are committing to address the problem without delay.

On Monday, 13 January 2025, Rector Milena Králíčková hosted some 60 foreign representatives, stationed in the Czech Republic at the historic Carolinum in Prague, to jointly ring in the New Year.

Cardinal Kurt Koch received a diploma confirming the award of the honorary degree of Doctor honoris causa of theological sciences at the Carolinum. The ceremony, overseen by the rector of the Charles University Milena Králíčková, took place in the Great Hall on Wednesday 8 January.
