Charles University ranks among 250 best universities in the world

CU improved significantly in a prestigious international ranking

According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, Charles University is the only Czech university to place among the top 250 universities worldwide. It thus ranks among the top 1.5% of educational institutions in the world. In the survey, the school placed 248th out of 1,500 schools overall, improving by 40 spots compared to last year. It is again the best of 16 Czech universities ranked.

This year, the performance of nearly 3,000 of the best universities from more than 100 countries was also analysed, based on an assessment of 17.5 million research results. As of this year, universities are evaluated in three new indicators, namely sustainability, the employment of graduates and international research cooperation. Traditionally, its reputation among academics or employers, the degree of internationalisation of academia, and teaching conditions and citation rates were the subject of the evaluation

.

According to this ranking, Charles University is among the 250 best universities in the world, and its current 248th place in the international comparison is a major achievement. It has achieved this position mainly thanks to its continued its high academic reputation - colleagues from other domestic and international universities ranked it among the top 200 universities in the respective survey. The university also did significantly better this year in its reputation among employers who rate universities with regard to the quality of their graduates. In this indicator, the university improved by 70 places year-on-year, ranking 210th among global institutions this year.

The university did particularly well in two of the three newly included criteria, where the extent of international research collaboration places the university among the top 100 schools. The result in the separate QS Sustainability Rankings published last year (161st-170th place) moved Charles University to 125th place in the “sustainability” criterion.

“I am delighted that the reputation of our university is growing globally, not only among students and academics, but also in relation to business. In particular, our open approach to sustainability in all its layers is a clear guide to how effectively and responsibly institutions - internally and externally - should work towards their goals. Being the top-ranked Czech university is a commitment and motivation for us to continue to be a driving force for positive social change,” Milena Králíčková, the rector of Charles University, confirmed.

The areas ranked in the QS World University Rankings are among the priorities of Charles University, whether it is the emphasis on the long-term employability of graduates in demanding professions or the continuous internationalisation of the academic community, where there is a growing representation of foreign teachers and students. The recently published Sustainable Development Strategy of Charles University: Towards sustainability 2030 is evidence of how seriously CU takes the issue.
