Statement by the Rector of Charles University on the tragic event in Graz

It is with the deepest sorrow that we have received news of the tragic shooting at the Gymnasium in Graz, Austria, which occurred on 10 June 2025. According to the information available so far, the attack claimed the lives of nine students and teachers, while several dozen others sustained injuries. On behalf of the entire Charles University community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and express our support for the injured and their loved ones during this immensely difficult time.

Educational institutions should be safe environments for all individuals. Any act of violence that shatters this sense of safety brings only grief and pain. Today’s tragic news makes this reality all the more poignant.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible event.
