Prague, 16. 8. 2023 – Amid growing international competition, Charles University (CU) has maintained its position and again been ranked among the best four hundred best universities in the world in a prestigious global evaluation that further highlights CU’s excellent placement in comparison with the best universities in the Central Europe region.
In the current edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, known as the Shanghai Ranking) again listed the thousand best higher education institutions in the world, and this year, too, Charles University was classified in places 301-400, the same as last year.
The methodology for evaluating institutions consists of six criteria: graduates and employees on whom a Nobel prize of Fields Medal was bestowed; number of researchers ranked among the most-cited globally; number of articles in the Nature and Science journals; number of articles in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index Web of Science; the weighted score of the first five indicators is divided by the number of academic staff.
Despite the underfinancing of Czech higher education, Charles University also recorded an excellent placement in the LERU CE7, a group within a grouping of 23 leading European universities (League of European Research Universities) that brings together seven Central European universities. Charles University is ranked first out of the seven leading Central European universities, followed by the universities of Warsaw (401–500), Budapest (501–600), Ljubljana (601–700) and Tartu (701–800).
Charles University’s ranking was also a positive reflection of the fact that the current ARWU ranking listed three scholars from the Czech Republic, one of whom is a researcher at Charles University, amongst the most commonly cited scientists worldwide.
With this ranking the University follows up on its recent success in the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2024, in which its position improved markedly compared to the previous year. It was ranked among the 250 best universities in the world, and therefore belongs to the top 1.5% of educational institutions in the world.
Masaryk University (ranked 401-500), Palacký University in Olomouc (601-700), the Czech Technical University in Prague (801-900), the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague (801-900) and the Brno University of Technology (901-1000) also attained the ranking list.
