Czech Rectors Conference discusses future of higher education with prime minister

A day after the official start of the 2024/2025 academic year on 3 October 2024, representatives of the Czech Rectors' Conference held discussions with Prime Minister Petr Fiala regarding the future of Czech higher education.

The discussions touched on not only the quality of education and university autonomy but also the state's interest or expectations in areas such as healthcare, nuclear energy, and other essential professions.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed at the start of the discussions that the following year would see an influx of financial support: “Next year, we will invest a record amount in education. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports will work with a budget of 291 billion crowns (approx. 11.7 billion euros – editor’s note), which represents an annual increase of nearly 23 billion crowns. Specifically for higher education, this means an additional 13 per cent, marking the highest increase in this budget category in history.”

Rectors at the meeting discussed, among other things, the amendment to the Higher Education Act and proposed changes to this amendment. “While many of the proposals point in the right direction and are motivated by the need for certain changes, unfortunately, many have not been legislatively or substantively well prepared; the Czech Rectors' Conference cannot recommend supporting them in the third reading. We will continue to discuss this topic with MPs,” the chair of the Czech Rectors' Conference and Rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková clarified.
