On Monday, 9 December 2024, Professor Milena Králíčková received France’s highest state distinction, the Legion of Honour, from the French Ambassador to the Czech Republic, His Excellency Stéphane Crouzat. “It is a great honour for me to accept this prestigious award. Working for Charles University, for higher education, and for the academic community in the Czech Republic has been a dream come true. To combine this with collaboration with French academic institutions is a privilege,” Rector Milena Králíčková said during her acceptance speech.

According to Ambassador Crouzat, Professor Králíčková is a renowned figure in her field, having led numerous research projects focusing on public health and child health. “We felt it was very important to recognise her contributions, as she has worked not only in the Czech Republic but also across Europe, including in France,” Ambassador Crouzat said.

A distinguished academic and a bridge between nations

Milena Králíčková has made significant contributions to the understanding of mechanisms related to human reproduction and women’s health. In addition to her scientific career, she has actively participated in initiatives to improve access to healthcare and promote gender equality in science, becoming a role model for women in the professional sphere.

Her links with France are not limited to research. She collaborates with several French universities. This academic interaction has fostered a mutually enriching exchange of knowledge and helped to strengthen relations between Czech and French educational institutions, facilitating, for example, the mobility of students and researchers between the two countries..

As the French Embassy of the Czech Republic stated, among other things, in a press release, Professor Milena Králíčková is today perceived as a ‘bridge’ between the Czech Republic and France and is a perfect embodiment of the spirit of European cooperation promoting the values of sharing and common progress.

Milena Králíčková obtained her doctorate in general medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pilsen (LFP). She was subsequently recruited as a physician at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the University Hospital in Pilsen and at the same time at the Institute of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pilsen. She devoted herself to research and clinical practice in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics. She took up her first managerial position in 2010, when she was appointed Vice-Dean for Development at the LFP. Since 2014, she has served as CU's Vice-Rector for Education. She also became Head of the Department of Histology and Embryology at LFP in 2011. In February 2022, she was elected to the post of Rector of Charles University, becoming the first woman to hold this position since the university was founded in 1348. In June 2023, she was elected President of the Czech Rectors' Conference. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with many renowned medical institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad; her work in fertility and reproductive technologies has benefited from strategic partnerships with many foreign institutions, including several French universities.
