Charles University was founded in 1348 and is one of the oldest universities in the world. It currently has 17 faculties (14 in Prague, 2 in Hradec Králové and 1 in Plzeň), 3 university institutions, 6 other centres for educational, scientific, research, development and other creative activities and centres for the provision of information services, 5 purpose-built, pan-university facilities and the Rectorate, the centre for the executive management of CU. The university has the highest scientific output of all institutions in the Czech Republic, as shown by e.g. the evaluation of scientific output by the the Research, Development and Innovation Council of the Czech Republic. With more than half a million points according to the current state Methodology for Results Evaluation, CU has an enormous lead over the second-placed institution on the list. The university has over 7,800 employees, of whom nearly 4,300 are academic and scientific staff. More than 52,000 students, around a sixth of all students in the Czech Republic, study at CR. These students take part in more than 300 accredited study programmes in 661 subjects. Nearly 20,000 students are part of bachelor degree programmes, nearly 25,000 in master’s degree programmes and 8,000 in postgraduate study programmes. Nearly 7,000 students come from abroad. Around 9,000 students graduate from the university every year, and are traditionally amongst the groups with the lowest unemployment rates in the Czech Republic. Over 16,000 participants graduate from lifelong-learning courses every year. The university also places emphasis on international cooperation with prestigious educational and scientific institutions. CU has more than four hundred bilateral agreements and 187 international partnership agreements with universities abroad.
