Statement of Charles University on the current Flood Situation

The CU Central Crisis Staff met on 24 September for the last time on the flood situation. According to current information, river flows are stable and the flood situation in the country is on the wane. Charles University continues to provide assistance and support to its students and employees and encourages them to join volunteer activities. For detailed information please follow this link.

Information for Students


Charles University will support students whose household or the household of their relatives has been affected by the flood event and offers various forms and tools of support. In connection with the flood situation, we provide information support through the CU Point helpline at (+420) 224 491 850 or via email at .


Students whose household has been affected by the flood situation can apply for an emergency hardship shcolarship if they are facing financial difficulties. Questions regarding scholarship applications can be directed to .


CU Point (Carolina Centre) can provide technical equipment loans (such as laptops, e-readers, tablets, etc.) to students affected by the current floods, and also offers socio-economic counselling if needed.


For a necessary period, part of the university dormitory capacity will be provided as accommodation for persons affected by the floods (students, employees, and their family members). If interested, please contact .


The start of the academic year 2024/2025 will not be postponed; the academic year will begin as planned on October 1, 2024, with classes starting according to each faculty’s schedule.


  • Exams and state exams: If you are registered for an exam or state exam (including the state doctoral exam or dissertation defence) and cannot attend due to verifiable reasons, please contact your faculty (study department) and you may be excused from the date. You may also request to take the exam remotely. In any case, it is essential to communicate your situation with your faculty.


  • Admission process for AY 2024/25: Almost all admission exam dates (including alternative dates) have already taken place. The exception is a few dates for doctoral programs. If you cannot attend for serious reasons, you may request to take the entrance exam online.


  • Enrolment: If you have been admitted to study but cannot attend enrollment in person, please contact your faculty (study department) to arrange the next steps (e.g., an alternative enrolment date).


  • Fees for extended studies: Students affected by the floods may apply for relief on the assessed fee for extended studies. If you find yourself in financial difficulties due to a natural disaster and the fee assessment decision is already final, please resolve your situation with your faculty’s study department or the university’s rectorate, which is prepared to offer you a payment plan or other solutions.


  • Graduation: If you are unable to attend your graduation ceremony due to the floods, please contact your faculty.



If any other unforeseen situations occur during your studies due to the floods, please contact your faculty or the Rectorate’s Office for Study and Student Affairs. You can also reach out to the Carolina Centre, which offers counselling for challenging situations.


Information for Employees


Charles University is prepared to assist all employees whose household or the household of their relatives has been affected by the flood event, offering many forms of support. For the duration of overcoming the obstacles related to the floods, employees may work from home if their individual situation permits.


If you are helping with flood recovery efforts, assisting a loved one, need to take care of personal matters, or your child cannot attend school or kindergarten, you can find clear information on your entitlements on the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs website. If you have suffered material or financial damage due to the floods, you can primarily apply for a special emergency state aid benefit at the relevant offices of the Czech Labour Office, based on your permanent residence. Inquiries about the emergency aid benefit (MOP) can be directed to the Labour Office helpline at +420 800 779 900 or via the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs portal (including the application form) here.

The current flood situation affecting the Czech Republic presents an extraordinary burden not only for those directly impacted or whose loved ones or property are at risk but may also trigger unpleasant reactions in those not directly affected.

How You Can Help


The Charles University Volunteer Centre has published a registration form for volunteers from among students, employees, and alumni who want to help in connection with the current floods in the Czech Republic. Thank you very much for your willingness to help.

Recommendations


If you are interested in helping people in affected areas, we recommend contacting relevant non-profit organizations through registration forms. The goal of such organised assistance is to ensure the maximum safety of volunteers and provide truly effective help in the affected areas. Follow the instructions of the organisation and the Integrated Rescue System (IZS), and DO NOT try to reach dangerous rivers and flooded or risky areas on your own.





Statement from


(15 September 2024)


On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Central Crisis Staff of Charles University (ÚKŠ CU) was activated, and additional measures were taken to ensure the safety of students, employees, and the academic community. The university leadership is in communication with the faculties and other units. We are monitoring the situation in Prague, Plzeň, and Hradec Králové, and the university is proceeding according to the Crisis Preparedness Plan.


Safety:

Charles University has taken measures to protect the health of its employees and students in its facilities. All employees, participants in university activities, and events currently in the field are safe, and thanks to the implemented preventive measures and regular monitoring, the situation is currently under control. We continue to monitor, evaluate, and take all necessary actions as the situation evolves.


Day-to-day Operations and Teaching:

The university’s operations remain unaffected, except for certain training facilities. Teaching and the organisation of ongoing exams and final state exams continue without restrictions. Students directly affected by the flood situation will be handled on an individual basis. Information will be updated in the coming days based on developments.


Support:

We are aware that the current crisis situation caused by flooding in various parts of the Czech Republic also affects many students and employees of Charles University, as well as their relatives and friends. The university, through CU Point, offers the following support:


  • Information line: During the CU Point info desk’s working hours (weekdays from 9:00 to 16:30), students and employees can contact the information line at (+420) 224 491 850 or by email at info@cuni.cz. Outside these hours, the emergency security line (+420) 771 275 564 or email bezpecnostni@ruk.cuni.cz can be used in crisis situations.


  • Financial support: Students affected by the flood situation can apply for emergency financial aid, such as a stipend for critical financial hardship.


  • Accommodation: Part of the capacity of university dormitories will be made available for those affected by the floods for as long as necessary. Further tools are being prepared to assist affected employees in urgent need.


  • Psychological help: A directory of counselling services is available on the university’s website. For scheduling psychological or other counselling, please contact poradny@cuni.cz.
