Floods 2024

Charles University continues to pay attention to the consequences of the floods in the Czech Republic and the priority is now to provide immediate assistance to students, employees and support volunteer activities. Below you will find all the necessary information regarding students, employees, the need for acute assistance and links to volunteer initiatives. We regularly update the recommendations to best respond to the needs of our academic community and the affected areas.


Students

Charles University will support students whose household or the household of their relatives has been affected by a flood event and has various forms and tools of support available.

In connection with the flood situation, we provide information support via the CU Point information line (+420) 224 491 850 or by e-mail


Students whose household has been affected by the flood situation can apply for an acute hardship bursary offered by the University for these situations in the event of financial hardship. Questions about scholarship applications can be directed to


CU Point (Carolina Centre) can provide students affected by the current floods with the loan of technical aids (laptops, readers, tablets, etc.) and also provides socio-economic counselling if needed.

The start of the academic year 2024/2025 will not be postponed, the academic year will start as planned, i.e. on 1 October 2024, teaching will start according to the timetable of the faculty concerned.


  • Exams and state exams: if you are registered for an exam/credit or state exam (including the state doctoral exam or dissertation defence) and you are unable to attend for a valid reason, please contact your faculty (study department) and you can excuse yourself from the exam. Alternatively, it is also possible to request to take the exam by distance learning. In any case, you must always communicate your situation with the faculty.


  • Admissions to AY 2024/25: Almost all the dates of the entrance examinations (including the alternative dates) have already been passed. The only exceptions are a few dates for PhD programmes. If you are unable to attend for serious reasons, you may request faculty to take the entrance exam online.

  • Enrolment: if you have been admitted to study but are unable to attend the enrolment in person, please contact your faculty and agree on the next course of action (e.g. alternative enrolment date).

  • Fees for extended studies: Students affected by the floods may apply for relief on the assessed fee for extended studies. If you find yourself in financial difficulties due to a natural disaster and the fee assessment decision is already final, please resolve your situation with your faculty's study department or the university’s rectorate, which is prepared to offer you a payment plan or other solutions.

  • Graduation: if you are unable to attend graduation due to flooding, please contact your faculty.


If other unexpected situations occur during your studies due to the floods, please contact your faculty or the Student Affairs Department of the Rector's Office.

Employees

Charles University is ready to help all male and female employees whose household or the household of their relatives has been affected by the flood event and offers many forms of support.

Employees of Charles University are allowed to work from home for the period of time necessary to overcome flood-related obstacles, if the individual situation permits.


If you yourself are recovering from the effects of the floods or are helping someone close to you, you need to sort out your personal affairs, your child cannot go to school or kindergarten and you do not know what exactly you are entitled to, you can find information clearly on the website of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.


If the floods have caused you material or financial damage, you can primarily apply for the state benefit of extraordinary immediate assistance at the relevant offices of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic, depending on where you are registered for permanent residence. The current flood situation that has hit the Czech Republic represents an extraordinary burden not only for all those who have been directly affected by the disaster or who have endangered their loved ones or property, but may also provoke unpleasant reactions in those who have not been directly affected by the situation.

Recommendations


If you are interested and willing to help people in the affected areas, we recommend contacting relevant NGOs through the registration forms. The aim of such organised assistance is to ensure maximum safety of volunteers and to provide truly effective assistance in the affected areas. Please follow the instructions of the organisation and the ISS and do not try to reach storm water and risk areas on your own.
