ANOTHER OUTSTANDING RESULT FOR CHARLES UNIVERSITY

September 27, 2023 – According to the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, Charles University is among the top 500 universities worldwide. Compared to the previous two years (where it ranked among the top 600), the school has moved up into the top 500. CU remains the highest-ranked university in the Czech Republic.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, now in its 20th edition, is one of the oldest and most prestigious university comparisons in existence. This year, it evaluated over nineteen hundred universities from 108 countries around the world using an updated methodology.

The ranking of universities in this list is still based on five original pillars, which currently include teaching and learning, research environment, research quality, industry cooperation and technology transfer, and internationalisation. However, instead of the previous 13, the ranking is now compiled based on 18 indicators, with the most significant change occurring in the research quality pillar, where one criterion has been replaced by four.

“Just a few days ago, Charles University achieved excellent results in a new comparison of European universities, placing it among the top one hundred in Europe. Today's ranking shows that we are not only able to maintain our excellent position on a global scale but also to significantly improve,” Milena Králíčková, the rector of Charles University said in response to the news.

After two years of being ranked in the top 600, Charles University improved its position, now placing among the top 500 universities in the world according to this year's results. The university achieved its best result in the teaching and learning pillar, where it ranks 341st. It also placed among the top four hundred universities in the research environment pillar. A substantial year-on-year improvement was noted in the industry collaboration and technology transfer pillar, largely due to its relatively high rating in a new indicator tracking research cited in patent documentation.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, following the June release of the QS World University Rankings, is the second multi-criteria university ranking where Charles University has improved its position year-on-year.

Among other Czech universities, Masaryk University achieved the best result (ranked 601–800) followed by the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague (ranked 801–1000).
