Matfyz Press publishes first Czech ‘handbook’ on science communication

The first book of its kind in Czech is how MatfyzPress, the publishing house of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University is characterising its new publication, Science Communication. In 15 chapters - plus a foreword by Czech TV moderator Daniel Stach, the book discusses the importance of science communicate for the general public, with tips how to best approach complex subjects.

The latest edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023, which belongs to the portfolio of the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, ranks Charles University among the world's leading institutions in terms of the quality of science in 20 fields, and in five cases among the top 200.

Charles University has been recognised as one of the world's premier institutions across all the disciplines it consistently offers in education and research, as found by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 by Subject released Thursday. Notably, Charles University excelled in the fields of arts & humanities, law, and business & economics, exhibiting year-on-year improvement in six subject areas.

Professors McKerrow and Medalia awarded honorary doctorates

On Wednesday 18 October, parasitologist James McKerrow and structural biologist Ohad Medalia were awarded honorary doctorates in special ceremonies at Charles University in recognition of their significant contributions to science and their long-term collaboration with the university. The event took place in the Great Hall of the Carolinum, the heart of the university.

Rector's letter to CU students on the situation in the Middle East

Dear students,

I am deeply saddened by the current events, aggression, and violence which are directly or indirectly affecting some of you. Charles University aims to secure and uphold not only ideal conditions for teaching, studying, and research but also to ensure a safe, peaceful, and respectful environment for communication. For these reasons, the entire leadership of Charles University strongly opposes all expressions of hatred, threats of violence, and ethnic and national delineation.

CU scientist clinches Neuron Award for lifelong contribution

The Neuron Foundation this year recognised numerous top scientists incl. experts from Charles University. The award for a lifelong contribution to science went to Czech internationally-known chemist František Švec from the Faculty of Pharmacy. CU also clinched awards for promising scientists.

Last bite of an Ordovician trilobite

Czech trilobites are in Nature! Palaeontologists from The Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, and their colleagues describe a 465-million-year-old trilobite with preserved gut contents. This unique fossil, three-dimensionally preserved in a so-called Rokycany ball, was found more than a hundred years ago. But it has revealed its secrets only now.
