Where better to kick off the 2024/25 academic year than at Kampus Hybernská cultural and educational centre? Upper-year students are already familiar with this creative hub, but for first-years, it was a truly an UniKátní START (Unique Start) to the next phase in educational life.

Thw last week in September saw the return of Czech European Researchers' Night, where scientific and educational institutions across the Czech Republic opened their doors to curious visitors. Charles University, of course, participated, welcoming the public into five of its buildings in Prague and Hradec Králové. The central theme of this year’s event was "Transformation."

The culmination of the national competition, held under the patronage of the British Embassy in Prague and attended by the British Ambassador Matt Field, Rector of Charles University Milena Králíčková, and supported by the Minister for Science and Research Marek Ženíšek.

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Central Crisis Staff of Charles University (ÚKŠ CU) was activated, and additional measures were taken to ensure the safety of students, employees, and the academic community. The university leadership is in communication with the faculties and other units. We are monitoring the situation in Prague, Plzeň, and Hradec Králové, and the university is proceeding according to the Crisis Preparedness Plan.

Charles University’s Hall of Patriots was a compelling site for an important conference organised by Microsoft on Thursday, featuring the company’s Vice-Chair and President Brad Smith. The head gave a keynote presentation called Sustaining Trust in the New AI Economy, outlining the challenges as well as potential risks ahead. That was followed by what was labelled a ‘fireside chat’ with European Commission VP Věra Jourová and Microsoft’s General Manager for Central and Eastern Europe, Michelle Simmons.

The XVth Summer Paralympic Games have begun in Paris, lasting from Wednesday 28 August to 8 September. According to Veronika Macková, an expert at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, the upcoming games are novel for at least one reason, if not more: for the first time, the organising committees of the Olympic and Paralympic Games merged and promoted the Olympics together.
