CU moves up in the prestigious international ranking of disciplinary comparisons

According to the newly published international QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, Charles University has improved in three fields. In total, CU was ranked in 25 subjects: in 22 of them CU is the highest-ranked Czech university ever. In addition, it made a completely new appearance in the ranking in four fields year-on-year.

Charles University celebrates 676th birthday

On Tuesday, 9 April, a festive meeting commemorating the 676th anniversary of the founding of Charles University took place in the Great Hall of the historic Carolinum building. On this occasion, the Miloslav Petrusek Prize for Presentation and Promotion and the Bedřich Hrozný Prize for Creative Achievement were awarded.

Unique centre to focus on armed conflict research

It is among 20 research projects newly supported by Charles University. A unique University Centre for Conflict and Post-Conflict Studies in Central Europe has been established at the Faculty of Law of Charles University under the leadership of Professor Veronika Bílková. It will focus on the legal aspects of armed conflicts and on post-war coping with the past.

President Čaputová pays tribute to victims of December shooting

Zuzana Čaputová was in Prague on Monday just a few days before the Slovak presidential elections. On what is one of her last trips to the Czech Republic as the Slovak head of state, the president, who is not running for a second term, visited CU’s Faculty of Arts to pay tribute to the victims of a shooting rampage in December. Last December 21, fourteen people – students and staff members – lost their lives after a gunman opened fire.

Foundation stone laid for second stage of construction of Campus

At a ceremony this week, representatives of Charles University, the Government of the Czech Republic, the Hradec Králové Region, the City of Hradec Králové and other distinguished guests laid the foundation stone for the second stage of the construction of the Campus for the Charles University Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Hradec Králové (MEPHARED 2). The new Campus will welcome students and researchers from the 2026/2027 academic year

Ninth round of Primus competition underway

Charles University provides a comprehensive system of support for science and research. It combines elements that have been progressively built since the 1990s with new programmes to promote excellent science to include all phases of scientific work. The system consists of several complementary university programmes. One of these programmes is the Primus competition.

French and Czech presidents pay tribute to fallen students, staff

A bouquet with the French tricolour was placed in front of the main building of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University by Emmanuel Macron. During his visit to Prague on Tuesday, 5 March, the French President paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy that took place at the Faculty last December. President Macron was accompanied to the building on Jan Palach Square by his Czech counterpart Petr Pavel. In front of the building, they had a short conversation with the Rector of Charles University Milena Králíčková and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts Eva Lehečková.

Rector Králíčková: I believe we can inspire each other

Since the start of Russia’s unprecedented attack on Ukraine, Charles University has been providing support for Ukrainian students and academics for whom the Czech Republic has become a temporary or second home. This week, the University organised a meeting with Professor Milena Králíčková, Rector of the Charles University, with dozens of scholars who are cooperating with CU or have received study scholarships here.

Expert: If Ukraine falls, why would the Russians stop there?

Jan Šír from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University has long focused on political and security developments in the post-Soviet republics. In his view, it is now primarily up to the West whether it will tolerate Putin's Russia's agression and complete violation of basic international rules and allow the system of mutual relations drawn after the Second World War to be redrawn.
