CU News on Equal Opportunities

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

Orange the world: 16 days of activism against gender-based violence is a global initiative of the United Nations that begins each year on 25 November - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Charles University is committed to zero tolerance of gender-based violence and is therefore joining the campaign again this year. The issue also resonates strongly among students, so this year UK Point has teamed up with the university's Student Majáles association, whose membership took on the organisation of the campaign events.

Be orange!

Orange is the colour that symbolises a world without violence and accompanies the campaign throughout the 16 days. On 25 November, major buildings around the world, including the Carolina Building, will be lit up in orange. You can wear orange too! At the same time, on 25 November, we will set up several orange stations on the grounds of Charles University, where you can, among other things, pin orange ribbons as a symbol of support for the campaign.

Did you find one of the stops? Take a photo, share it on social media with the hashtag #OrangeTheWorldUK and help spread awareness of the campaign and the fight against gender-based violence among your friends.

Upcoming events...

The campaign is 16 days long and will culminate on 10 December, Human Rights Day. During this period, the Student Majal, in collaboration with other student associations, is planning a series of events reflecting the theme of the campaign. For more information, follow the Student Majáles social media (Facebook, Instagram).

International Women´s Day in Science at CU

CU Point together with Board for Equal Opportunities of CU invites you to this special event dedicated to women in science, and particularly to women from abroad working or studying at Charles University. We will meet on 8th March at 6PM at Kampus Hybernská. The whole evening will be held in English.

We will start with screening a documentary film „Picture a Scientist“.

„This film chronicles the groundswell of women scientists who are changing the face of science in the United States and around the world. Using dogged research techniques and careful data collection, these women are not only contributing to our understanding of what keeps women scientists down, but advocating for a more diverse and inclusive future for all.“

Afterwards, we invited various female scientists coming from diverse countries, that work at CU now, to discuss about their experience with being an international scholar at CU. Discussion will be led by Associate Prof. Věra Sokolová, the Head of Graduate Program of Gender Studies at Faculty of Humanities, who is also the Chair of the Board for Equal Opportunities of CU and Vice-Chair of Working Group on Equality and Diversity in Coimbra Group.
