GOLDMAN SACHS GLOBAL LEADERS AWARDS

Twelve Undergraduates from Central and Eastern European Campuses Recognized in London Ceremony

BUDAPEST, May 28, 2002 - Twelve remarkable university students from across Central and Eastern Europe were honored today as Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. They are among 100 outstanding second-year university students from universities in 17 countries who are being recognized in similar ceremonies around the world this spring.

The Global Leaders were selected on the basis of their outstanding academic abilities and leadership achievements. Among the Central and Eastern European winners, their leadership activities include founding NGOs, participating in national and international competitions (e.g. First Step to the Nobel Prize, European Union Contest for Young Scientists), leading academic debate teams, and organizing international youth conferences.

The Goldman Sachs Foundation, along with its partner organization, the Institute of International Education, created the Global Leaders Program to identify and reward the academic excellence and leadership potential of 100 of the most accomplished second-year students from all disciplines worldwide. The competition helps foster their leadership skills and prepares them for distinctive service to society and their future professions.

Along with the distinction of being selected as "Goldman Sachs Global Leaders," the 100 students worldwide have received awards of U.S. $2,000 each and participated in award ceremonies at which renowned leaders in the public, civic, and private sector discussed the challenges of leadership in the 21st Century. At the May 10th award ceremony at the Goldman Sachs ' European headquarters in London, winners from universities in the United Kingdom, Western Europe and Central and Eastern European campuses were addressed by Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education; Lawton Fitt, Managing Director of the Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.; Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, Executive Director for Poland, Bulgaria and Albania at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, London; and Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, International Governor of The British Broadcasting Company.

"The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program reflects the Foundation 's mission to identify and promote innovation and excellence in education worldwide," said Stephanie Bell-Rose, president of The Goldman Sachs Foundation. "Now, more than ever before, we need to prepare our best and brightest to operate in a global context, and to educate our future leaders for a complex technology-driven environment in varied cultural settings. We hope that the experience as a Goldman Sachs Global Leader will inspire these students at this important time in their lives, and we hope that the relationships they develop as Global Leaders will provide further opportunities over the years." The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program was launched last year by the Foundation, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE). Through its overseas offices and local educational partners in 17 countries around the world, IIE conducts an annual competition on 64 of the world 's leading universities and colleges to identify 100 of the most accomplished second-year students for the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program. Students at participating colleges and universities in Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States are eligible to apply.

"The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program is a tremendous investment in preparing the next generation to address pressing global issues," said Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education. "The opportunity to forge relationships and share ideas across borders that this program offers will prepare these extremely talented young people to become the kind of leaders of governments and societies upon which ultimate success in the wars against poverty, disease and terrorism will depend."

After meeting at the Global Leadership Institute last July, two of the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders for 2001, Syed Atif Ansar from Georgetown University, and Insa Klasing from Oxford University in the United Kingdom, are already working to turn a shared idea into a reality. They have joined efforts to create a non-profit organization to provide informal community education in northern India. According to 2001 Global Leader Tim Soutphommasane of the University of Sydney, "The Global Leadership Institute is the most worthwhile investment any young person can make in their future, whatever their interests and ambitions. Unique, challenging and inspirational, it is an experience that will make an indelible impact on the way you approach things in life."

Through interviews with a distinguished panel of leaders from business, government and the nonprofit sector, 6 of the 12 students (listed above) from Central and Eastern European universities will be selected to participate in the Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute in late July 2002 in New York City, along with 44 other students selected internationally this spring. Upon successful completion of the Institute, these 50 students will be awarded Top Honors, which include an additional $3,000 award.

The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Institute will provide this select group of students from around the world an opportunity to examine important issues such as global leadership, the new world economy, e-commerce, and international development. World-renowned faculty from The Leadership Center at Morehouse College and The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, senior Goldman Sachs executives, and leaders from the nonprofit, business and governmental sectors will lead challenging and thought-provoking seminars.

The mission of The Goldman Sachs Foundation is to promote excellence and innovation in education and to improve the academic performance and lifelong productivity of young people worldwide.
