Praha, 17. 7. 2024 – Grant na realizaci prestižních projektů z evropského programu Horizon Europe (schéma ERA Chair) získaly hned dva odborné týmy Univerzity Karlovy. Na Filozofické fakultě UK (FF UK) vznikne špičkové výzkumné centrum areálových studií a na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě UK (MFF UK) budou odborníci na teorie her zkoumat algoritmy v socioekonomické oblasti.
Špičkové výzkumné centrum areálových studií
Odborníci z Filozofické fakulty (FF UK) mohou nyní založit Centrum pro multidisciplinární areálová studia (CEMAS), které zastřeší výzkumné aktivity aktuálního politického a sociálního vývoje i soudobé kritické jevy v mimoevropských regionech. Centrum navíc počítá i s řadou popularizačních aktivit směrem k veřejnosti a iniciativ s dopadem na rozhodovací sféru.
Projekt bude usilovat také o sloučení areálových studií na FF UK a přispěje k tomu, aby si areálová studia na FF UK i nadále uchovala světovou kvalitu. „Nově vzniklé centrum umožní lepší koordinaci výzkumných aktivit mezi jednotlivými areálovými obory na FF UK a významně podpoří synergii společenskovědních a humanitních přístupů ke studiu mimoevropských oblastí,“ představil projekt jeho koordinátor docent Karel Kouba ze Střediska ibero-amerických studií FF UK.
Profesorka Mariana Llanos, která se stane nositelkou prestižního titulu ERA Chair na FF UK, v současnosti působí jako vedoucí výzkumu na předním německém výzkumném pracovišti German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), je přední odbornicí v oblasti komparativních studií Latinské Ameriky a mimo jiné stála v čele Latinskoamerické politologické asociace (ALACIP). „Je mi ctí být nositelkou ERA Chair na Univerzitě Karlově. Těší mě, že mohu podpořit modernizaci a propagaci areálových studií v České republice a přispět k výměně znalostí mezi oběma pracovišti i mezi našimi společnostmi,“ doplnila profesorka Mariana Llanos.

Algoritmická teorie her v socioekonomii
Na MFF UK vznikne za pomoci špičkového odborníka z pařížské Sorbony Michela Grabische centrum AGATE (Algorithmic Game Theory in Socioeconomics). Informatický výzkum a inovace v tradičních oblastech jsou v Česku na dobré úrovni, a to i díky Informatické sekci MFF UK, jíž bude centrum AGATE součástí. Projekt pomůže posunout univerzitu, a s ní i celou ČR, mezi evropskou špičku.
„V minulosti byly aplikace informatiky cíleny především do oblasti výpočetní techniky, inženýrství a technologií. V dnešní době ale informatika zažívá „zlatou horečku“ v rozvoji sociálně-ekonomických aplikací, a to především s využitím algoritmické teorie her a souvisejících oblastí. Abychom se této vědecké revoluce mohli účastnit, je třeba se od tradičních odvětví informatiky posunout k oblastem, jako je algoritmická teorie her, teorie rozhodování, výpočetní sociální volba a optimalizace férovosti, logistika veřejné správy s jejich nástroji z matematiky, informatiky a optimalizace včetně strojového učení,“ uvedl vedoucí projektu AGATE Martin Loebl, profesor Katedry aplikované matematiky MFF UK a předseda Učené společnosti ČR. Jak dodal, využití herně-teoretických algoritmů a rozhodovacích metod v současné době v českém prostředí, zejména v netechnických oblastech, podstatně chybí.
Projekt si klade za cíl též propojení excelentního výzkumu s inovacemi. Držitel pozice ERA Chair profesor Michel Grabish poskytne UK kromě své bohaté expertízy z mnoha oblastí informatiky a ekonomie i své zkušenosti z vedení oddělení mikroekonomie na Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne v Paříži.

Prague, July 17, 2024 - Two expert teams from Charles University have been awarded a grant for the implementation of prestigious projects from the European Horizon Europe programme (ERA Chair scheme).The Faculty of Arts of Charles University (CU FA) will establish a cutting-edge research centre for area studies and at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University (CUNI MFF), specialists in game theory, will establish a centre for research on algorithms in the socio-economic field.
Cutting-Edge Research Centre for Area Studies
Experts from the Faculty of Arts (CU FA) can now establish the Centre for Multidisciplinary Area Studies (CEMAS), which will focus on research activities on current political and social developments as well as contemporary critical phenomena in non-European regions. In addition, the Centre envisages a range of public outreach activities and initiatives with an impact on decision-making.
The project will also seek to merge the campus studies at the Faculty of Arts and will contribute to ensuring that the campus studies. “The newly established centre will enable better coordination of research activities among the individual disciplines at CU FA and will significantly enhance the synergy of both social scientific and humanities approaches to the study of non-European regions,” saidAssociate Professor Karel Kouba, coordinator of the project from the Centre for Ibero-American Studies at the Faculty of Arts.
Professor Mariana Llanos, who will become hold the prestigious ERA Chair on behalf of CU FA, is currently a lead research fellow at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), a leading German research institute and is a leading expert in comparative Latin American studiesand she was the head of the Latin America Political Science Association (ALACIP). “I am honoured to hold the ERA Chair at Charles University. I look forward to collaborating on am delighted to be able to support the modernisation and promotion of area studies in the Czech Republic and to contribute to the exchange of knowledge between the two institutions and between our societies," added Professor Mariana Llanos.

Algorithmic game theory in socio-economics
In the Czech Republic, research and innovation in traditional computer science (theoretical computer science, complexity, algorithms and data structures, discrete mathematics, optimization, artificial intelligence), as known from more than 30 years of history, is well developed, thanks to several strong academic institutions, including the School of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University (CUNI MFF), which hosts this proposal. This academic excellence has put Czechia among the leaders of Eastern Europe in information technologies.
"In the past, the computer science applications were mainly targeted at computing, engineering and technology. Nowadays, however, computer science experiences a ´gold rush´ and is moving towards the development of socio-economic applications. This emerging field is often referred to as broad algorithmic game theory (AGATE). In order to participate in this scientific revolution, we need to focus on areas such as Algorithmic Game Theory in Socioeconomics (AGATE) domain, which includes algorithmic game theory, decision theory, computational social choice and social welfare, optimisation of fairness, public administration logistics and indirect mechanisms, socio-economic networks with its tools from mathematics, computer science and optimization including machine learning," said AGATE project leader Professor Martin Loebl from the Department of Applied Mathematics at the CUNI MFF and president of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic. He added that the development of algorithms and game and decision theoretic methods in the socio-economic field is currently significantly lacking in the Czechia.
With the help of ERA Chair holder Michel Grabisch from the Economics Institute at the Sorbonne in Paris, the project aims to link excellent research with innovation and strengthen the Czech Republic's research excellence in the European area.
