Mapy Pavla Josefa Šafaříka byly zapsány do Registru Paměť světa UNESCO
Praha, 14. 10. 2026 – Unikátní kartografické dílo Pavla Josefa Šafaříka, jednoho z nejvýznamnějších slovanských učenců 19. století, získalo mezinárodní uznání nejvyšší kategorie. Při příležitosti oficiálního zápisu tohoto díla do prestižního rejstříku Paměť světa (Memory of the World) UNESCO se uskuteční slavnostní program pro odbornou i širokou veřejnost. Součástí oslav bude odhalení pamětní desky, křest knihy Kartograf Šafařík a vernisáž výstavy Hic sunt Slavi. Záštitu nad výstavou převzal děkan Přírodovědecké fakulty doc. RNDr. Vladimír Krylov, Ph.D.
Zápis Šafaříkových map do rejstříku Paměť světa UNESCO stvrzuje jejich mimořádnou hodnotu pro světové kulturní dědictví. Tato díla představují nejen vrchol tehdejší tematické kartografie a etnografie, ale i klíčový dokument pro pochopení historického vývoje a geografického rozmístění slovanských národů.
Oslavy tohoto významného úspěchu nabídnou veřejnosti pestrý program, který propojí kartografii, historii, vědu i umění:
-
Odhalení pamětní desky akademického sochaře Zbyňka Fojtů: důstojný akt připomínající odkaz P. J. Šafaříka a význam aktuálního zápisu pod záštitou MoW UNESCO.
-
Křest knihy: představení a slavnostní křest publikace autorek Evy Novotné a Mirky Tröglové Sejtkové Kartograf P. J. Šafařík, věnované učencovu kartografickému dílu v historickém kontextu i procesu přijetí do rejstříku MoW UNESCO. Vydává nakladatelství Karolinum.
-

Pavel Josef Šafařík’s Maps Have Been Inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register
Prague, October 14, 2026 – The unique cartographic work of Pavel Josef Šafařík, one of the most prominent Slavic scholars of the 19th century, has received the highest level of international recognition. To mark the official inscription of this work in UNESCO’s prestigious Memory of the World Register, a festive program will be held for both experts and the general public. The celebrations will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, the launch of the book Kartograf Šafařík, and the opening of the exhibition Hic sunt Slavi. The exhibition is held under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Vladimír Krylov, Ph.D.
The inclusion of Šafařík’s maps in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register confirms their extraordinary value to world cultural heritage. These works represent not only the pinnacle of thematic cartography and ethnography of their time but also a key document for understanding the historical development and geographical distribution of the Slavic nations.
Celebrations of this significant achievement will offer the public a diverse program that brings together cartography, history, science, and art:
Unveiling of a commemorative plaque by academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů: a dignified ceremony honoring the legacy of P. J. Šafařík and the significance of the recent inscription under the auspices of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Program.
Book launch: presentation and ceremonial launch of the publication by authors Eva Novotná and Mirka Tröglová Sejtková, Cartographer P. J. Šafařík, dedicated to the scholar’s cartographic work in its historical context and the process of its inclusion in the UNESCO MoW Register. Published by Karolinum.
Opening of the “Hic sunt Slavi” exhibition: The exhibition’s title paraphrases the well-known phrase for blank spots on maps, but in this case refers to Slavic settlements. The opening ceremony will introduce visitors not only to the author’s life and his extensive scholarly collaborations but, above all, to the maps of Slavic settlement areas that Šafařík created.
“The inclusion of Šafařík’s maps in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register is a tremendous success and a recognition of Czech science and cartography. I am delighted that we can present these unique items to the public as part of such a well-rounded program,” says Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Luděk Šídlo, Ph.D., Vice Dean of the Geography Section at the Faculty of Science, Charles University.
The ceremonial program will take place on October 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Albertov 6, Prague 2, 2nd floor. Admission to the event is free.
Exhibition dates: October 22, 2026 – April 22, 2027
