Univerzita Karlova společně s ČKR slavnostně zahájily akademický rok
Praha, 1.
Schopnost klást správné otázky a podrobovat vlastní názory kritice bude v příštích letech jednou z nejcennějších dovedností,“ uvedl při slavnostním zahájení rektor Univerzity Karlovy Jiří Zima.

Charles University and the Czech Rectors’ Conference jointly inaugurated the academic year
Prague, 1 October 2026 – On Thursday 1 October, Charles University officially opened the new academic year in the Great Hall of Karolinum, in the presence of Charles University Rector Jiří Zima, Minister for Education, Youth and Sport Robert Plaga, and the Mayor of Prague Bohuslav Svoboda. This significant event was also combined this year with a meeting of the Presidium of the Czech Rectors’ Conference, which last took place at Karolinum four years ago. At the same time, the now traditional welcome ceremony for students was held at the Hybernská Campus.
“The university’s role is not merely to impart knowledge. It must teach students to distinguish between information and knowledge, between opinion and fact, between a quick answer and genuine understanding. It must be a place of open dialogue, critical thinking and debates based on reasoned arguments. The ability to ask the right questions and to subject one’s own views to criticism will be one of the most valuable skills in the years to come,” said Jiří Zima, Rector of Charles University, at the opening ceremony.
On this day, students were able to begin their academic year at the Hybernská Campus, where a cultural programme had once again been organised for them this year, including several bands, the popular pub quiz and a live recording of Respekt’s political podcast Vládneme, nerušit. This year, Charles University will welcome a record 19,000 newly enrolled students, which is just under 2,000 more than last year.
