Flagship: 2 - Europeanness: multilingualism, pluralities, citizenship
Faculty: FHS
Project leader: Novotná, Marie
This project brings together for the first time researchers and teachers in Old Norse studies from Charles University, Sorbonne University and the University of Copenhagen, each approaching the field from a different perspective. Literary studies, the history of religion, digital humanities and lexicography will be combined to open new interdisciplinary perspectives for research and to introduce innovative teaching methods. The collaboration includes a workshop in Prague and bilateral visits between the partner universities.
The project addresses EU priorities such as multilingualism, data literacy, critical thinking and interdisciplinarity. It explores European citizenship through literature, arts and cultural heritage, with a focus on the plurality of memories across Europe and the role of languages in contrast. One of its aims is to help students understand how present-day European values have deep historical roots and how knowledge of these roots can help prevent their misuse, including the appropriation of Viking themes in far-right political rhetoric.
Planned activities include guest lectures for students, academic exchanges, and meetings with local experts to identify needs and possibilities for future cooperation. The project will connect academic environments with different strengths, offering benefits for students, early-career researchers and senior academics, and laying the groundwork for long-term collaboration in this specialised field.
