In the late Middle Ages, the Upper Palatinate in present-day Bavaria was a region where the interests of the Electorate of Palatinate, the Kingdom of Bohemia and, to a lesser extent, the Kingdom of Denmark intersected. While the Palatinate ruled the area, Bohemia held parts as fiefs gained by Charles IV in the 14th century, and Denmark was in personal union with Palatinate-Neumarkt in the 1440s. This project examines the political, territorial and dynastic relationships among these powers during the 15th and early 16th centuries.
Researchers from Charles University, Heidelberg University and the University of Copenhagen will establish a joint research and teaching platform focused on regional history in a European perspective. Activities include academic visits, a cycle of online lectures in German and a workshop in Prague. Students will be directly involved through research tasks, poster presentations and short-term mobilities, while the collaboration will also support the digitalisation of historical archival sources and the development of online teaching resources.
The partnership will promote multilingualism, foster interdisciplinary exchange, and prepare the ground for future joint projects and funding applications. By linking expertise and resources across three institutions, it will contribute to a common research-based educational framework and enhance the understanding of shared regional history within the broader European context.
