This month, Charles University became the first stop for a traveling exhibition about the Vienna Circle from the University of Vienna. The show was accompanied by a conference on the lasting influence of the group – which included philosophers and scientists such as Moritz Schlick and Otto Neurath.
The first keynote speaker is Kateřina Králová, an Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Russian and Eastern European Studies, and project leader of “Beyond Hegemonic Narratives and Myths”. In her research, she focuses on reconciliation with the Nazi past, the Holocaust and its aftermath, the Greek Civil War and post-war reconstruction, particularly in Greece.
On 24 September 2021, the Rector of Charles University, Professor Tomáš Zima, was pleased to award a Gold Medal to Dr Andrew Graham in recognition of the strong reinvigoration of the Europaeum that has occurred under his leadership. Charles University joined the Europeaum in 2001 and has been a strong supporter ever since. It has therefore especially welcomed the recent resurgence.
Thomas Hylland Eriksen is a world-renowned anthropologist whose research has taken him from the islands of Mauritius and Trinidad to Australia and back to his homeland, Norway. A professor at the University of Oslo, Eriksen is a prolific author, perhaps best known for the seminal Tyranny of the Moment: Fast and Slow Time in the Information Age (2001) and Overheating: An Anthropology of Accelerated Change (2016). The professor was honoured by Charles University recently.
Young international academics from Charles University got together to hear the Story of Prague. Despite a torrential rain and low temperatures the young researchers from Bosnia, Brazil, Great Britain, India, Italy, South Korea, Spain, Ukraine and the USA enjoyed the most and less famous Prague sights, stories and legends during a guided tour organised by CU SWC .
The Medic Orchestra of Semmelweis University (Hungary) - this year marks the 250th anniversary of the school's foundation - was formed eleven years ago and has been led by artistic director and conductor Gergely Dubóczky since 2009. Its members are primarily students from the medical school, as well as from other Hungarian institutions of higher education.
The Chaperon ERA Research Club invites you to participate in our Nerd Art Prize contest by sending us your best scientific photo or picture. Five best pictures will be selected by a committee composed of the Chaperon project leadership group. The winning pictures will be hung in the newly constructed campus building of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen and the winners will be rewarded with surprise gifts.
Before we launch a new platform from September 2021, it is necessary to temporarily close all libraries’ operation at Charles University. The temporary shutdown will take place from 12 to 31 August 2021 inclusive. Data from existing systems will be transferred to the new platform, the system configuration will be finalized, and we will train all CU libraries staff during this period.
The Open Science Support Centre offers a number of educational activities and methodological materials, including online courses in the Moodle for further education system. One of the first courses, Open Access at CU - How to publish Open Access?, is now also available in English.
Based on the Czech government’s Emergency Measure, starting on 17 March 2021 employees shall not be admitted to workplaces without confirmation that they have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. For this reason, Charles University is initiating the large-scale testing of its employees.

Last month, the rectors of the 4EU+ Alliance established a new legal entity. The association, based in Heidelberg, aims to strengthen cooperation among all six member universities, says Charles University’s Vice-Rector for European Affairs Lenka Rovná.
The International research Evaluation Board has completed its internal evaluation of research activity at CU. This is the first time that a Czech university has attempted, on its own initiative, to carry out such a comprehensive, critical and independent evaluation of its own research activity with the assistance of an international panel.
