European University Association is one of the most important organizations influencing higher education and science policy in the European Union. The European University Association has 850 members in 47 European countries. It also provides unique expertise in higher education and science as well as a facility for the exchange of ideas and experiences. The results of EUA's work are available to its members and partners on the labor market during conferences, seminars, using websites and publications.
The European University Association was created by the merger of the Conference of European Rectors (CRE) and the Confederation of Rectors of the European Union in 2001. Since Charles University was a member of CRE, its membership was automatically transferred to this newly formed association. The membership includes the highest representatives of universities (rectors and presidents), representatives of national rectors' conferences, university associations and university networks of higher education institutions. The seat is Brussels.
The association fully identifies with the values and principles announced in 1998 by Magna Charta. Other strategic partners are Academic Cooperation Association (ACA), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), International Association of Universities (IAU), and International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), UNESCO and OECD.
Member universities can use this scheme to be assessed by external auditors from other EUA member universities in any subject area. The external auditors visit the institution and evaluate, through interviews with the staff and university management, how the situation at the home institution looks compared to European assumptions and standards. The institution will then receive an official evaluation together with a proposal for possible changes.
