Authorisation to use the academic title “master” (magistr)

All graduates who successfully completed their studies at Charles University prior to 1990 and obtained a university degree, but were not awarded any official academic title at the time, are entitled by law to use the academic title “master” (magistr) (abbreviated as "Mgr." and placed before the first name).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

According to the valid and effective Higher Education Act, the academic titles of university graduates awarded under previous legislation remain unaffected – this means that graduates can continue to use them (§ 102 of Act no. 111/1998 Coll., to regulate higher education institutions).

The academic title “master” (magistr) (abbreviated as "Mgr." and placed before the first name) was introduced in the Czech Republic for graduates of university studies at a higher education institution in 1990 by the previous Higher Education Act (§ 21 (2) (a) of Act no. 172/1990 Coll., regulating higher education institutions).

The previous Higher Education Act also established the right of graduates who successfully completed their university studies prior to 1 July 1990 and were not awarded an academic degree, professional title or other degree of university graduates under previous regulations to use the academic title “master” (magistr) (§ 43 (2) of Act no. 172/1990 Coll., regulating higher education institutions).

With this, legislation facilitated the continuity of higher education and a smooth transition to the new system of academic titles.

If you require confirmation of your entitlement to use the academic title “master” (magistr), please provide a completed and signed form.
