Memories of Teachers and Classmates from the Lauder Schools

When Majda arrived at the Lauder Schools, we called her Mája. It was like a name for a fairy. Mája laughed a lot and with great joy. She asked smart questions, often questioning what the teachers said. And she never, truly never, offended them with the way she raised her objections. At school, we greatly welcomed her straightforwardness and courage.

She often talked and wrote about her parents and sisters, about trips to the mountains, orienteering, the club she led... She spoke about the books she read. And she also listened to what others had to say. She was delighted with her relationship with Tonda, joked around, and was cheerful.

She made the world around her better. She started where she could reach, cared about relationships in the class, spoke up when anyone behaved unfairly (she spoke up!), took care of children, and… also did manicures for elderly ladies in a care home as part of her volunteering.

To her classmates, she was both a friend and someone who opened up new opportunities. “Májo, I will always associate you with snow, especially because of your love for cross-country skiing. I will never forget how we went to the mountains together and you took me skiing for the first time. Even though I was exceptionally bad at it, you didn’t give up on me and very determinedly tried to make sure I enjoyed it. I deeply appreciate having had the chance to know you and spend time with you. No words can express everything I would like to say, but I hope, wherever you are, it’s snowing there.”

To her loved ones, Majda offered true friendship, which remains a source of gratitude. “Mája was my best friend. I will remember her waving at me on the metro platform. She was always there, waving and smiling. She was the best ‘best friend’ I could ever wish for. I could tell her absolutely everything and she never judged me. She was exceptional, always herself, and I deeply value that because it is incredibly rare, and I am grateful to have met and known her. I see her standing there, waving, and her blonde hair getting tousled by the wind. So, we say goodbye, and I wave back.”

When Majda was writing her motivation for volunteering in the seventh grade, she wrote: “I wanted to improve my communication with people and feel useful in some way.” We are sure she succeeded. Majda remains an inspiration to us all. May her soul be received among the living and her memory be a blessing.
