The Faculty of Science has succeeded in the call for proposals of the Programme Johannes Amos Comenius (OP JAK). The new project, under the leadership of Professor Vojtěch Ettler, will focus on natural and anthropogenic geohazards. The aim of the project is to study in detail the threats in the Earth's upper spheres, to understand the causes of their occurrence and to quantify the possible impacts on human society.

On Wednesday 18 October, parasitologist James McKerrow and structural biologist Ohad Medalia were awarded honorary doctorates in special ceremonies at Charles University in recognition of their significant contributions to science and their long-term collaboration with the university. The Neuron Foundation this year recognised numerous top scientists incl. experts from Charles University. The award for a lifelong contribution to science went to Czech internationally-known chemist František Švec from the Faculty of Pharmacy. CU also clinched awards for promising scientists.

Czech trilobites are in Nature! Palaeontologists from The Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, and their colleagues describe a 465-million-year-old trilobite with preserved gut contents. This unique fossil, three-dimensionally preserved in a so-called Rokycany ball, was found more than a hundred years ago. But it has revealed its secrets only now.
