International Scholarship Programmes

Students of Charles University may also undertake mobility within international programmes administered primarily by the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research (Dům zahraniční spolupráce). These programmes are generally linked to specific countries and provide financial support for the implementation of individual projects or mobility activities.


Below you will find an overview of the most popular programmes. Scholarships for German-speaking Countries

Aktion

MA and PhD students

  • Funding for mobility to Austria only

  • Duration of mobility: 1–5 months

  • The purpose is preparation of final theses (use of libraries, archives, laboratories, consultations with experts, etc.)

  • Application deadlines: March and October

  • Scholarship amount: EUR 1,300 per month

DAAD

BA, MA and PhD students

The German Academic Exchange Service funds mobility to Germany only. All information on individual scholarships is available here. The Czech office of DAAD offers individual consultations.


DAAD offers a wide range of opportunities:

  1. Scholarships for participation in a summer course in Germany

    • Duration of mobility: approximately one month

    • Scholarship amount: free participation in a summer course + accommodation covered + travel allowance

    • Application deadline: October

    • Various topics – opportunity to improve German language skills as well as other fields of study

  2. Study Scholarships: Master’s Degree Programmes in All Fields

    • Full Master’s degree / part of studies in Germany

    • Duration: 10–24 months

    • Scholarship amount: EUR 992 per month + travel allowance + study allowance

    • Application deadline: November

  3. Research Grants

    • For doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers only

    • Intended for the implementation of a research project

    • Duration: 2–12 months (doctoral candidates), 2–6 months (postdoctoral researchers)

    • Scholarship amount: EUR 1,400 per month + travel allowance

    • Application deadline: November

  4. Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates within COTUTELLE

    • Duration: 7–24 months

    • Scholarship amount: EUR 1,400 per month

Czech-German Future Fund

BA, MA and PhD students

  • Funding for mobility to Germany only

  • Duration of mobility: scholarships for 1–2 semesters

  • Preparation of a research project related to Czech-German topics

  • Fields of study: humanities and social sciences (history, political science, social sciences, law, economics, linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies, philosophy, etc.)

  • Scholarship amount: MA and PhD students: EUR 900 per month; BA students: EUR 650 per month (+ a one-off contribution for study materials and travel expenses in the amount of EUR 900 or 650)

BTHA

BA, MA and PhD students

  • Funding for mobility and study stays at Bavarian public universities only

  • Several funding options are available:

  • Funding for Postgraduate Study Programmes

    • Scholarship intended to finance consecutive Master’s, doctoral or postdoctoral studies

    • Duration of stay: 1 academic year (may be extended up to twice – for a maximum total of 3 years)

    • Amount of financial support: EUR 992 per month

    • Application deadline: December

    • Duration of mobility: approximately one month

GFPS

BA, MA and PhD students

  • Funding for mobility to Germany only

  • Scholarships intended for study stays and practical internships

  • Applicants must not be older than 30 years

  • Study stay: Instead of completing courses and earning credits, the student works on an individual project during the stay abroad (most often a final thesis).

  • Internship: 3 days per week of work, the remaining time devoted to study

  • In university cities, members of GFPS operate within so-called Stadtgruppen (local groups), which support incoming scholarship holders, assist them with study administration, and help them integrate into social life.

  • Application deadlines: May (for the winter semester), October (for the summer semester)

  • Amount of financial support: EUR 650 per month (for a maximum of 5 months)

KAAD

MA and PhD students

  • Funding for mobility to Germany only

  • A prerequisite is church and social engagement, as well as openness to interreligious dialogue

  • German language proficiency at a minimum level of B1 is required

  • Types of stays:

    • Master’s studies in Germany: up to 24 months

    • Doctoral studies in Germany: up to 36 months

    • Research stays for doctoral candidates: up to 12 months

  • Scholarship amount: the exact amount is not specified; funding generally covers actual costs

  • Application deadline: it is recommended to apply at least 6 months before the planned start of the stay

CERN - Doctoral Student Programme

PhD students

  • Opportunity to work on a doctoral dissertation and be employed at CERN in Switzerland

  • Duration: 12 to 36 months

  • Fields of study: Applied Physics, Engineering, or Computing

  • Amount of financial support: generally CHF 3,891 per month + additional benefits and services

PhD and postdoctoral researchers

  • Mobility to Austria (primarily Vienna)

  • For doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers only

  • Funding is primarily intended for thematic research activities according to the announced calls

  • A wide range of opportunities is available; current calls and conditions can be found HERE

  • Amount of financial support: approximately EUR 3,000 per month + provision of research facilities

  • Application deadlines: vary depending on the opportunity, generally between January and March

PhD students

  • Funding for mobility to France only

  • Also open to non-Francophone students (provided that the French supervisor agrees to study or a research stay in English)

  • Types of stays:

    • Study within cotutelle: scholarship awarded for a maximum of 3 years (3 stays in France; each year a scholarship is granted for 5 months), amount: EUR 1,690 per month

    • Short-term research stay: 1–3 months, amount: EUR 1,704 per month

  • Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies

  • Funding for mobility to universities in Central and South-Eastern Europe

  • Types of mobility:

    • Short-term stay for the purpose of preparing a final thesis: 1–2 months

    • Semester stay: 3–10 months

    • Study visit: 3–5 days

    • Summer school: 6–30 days

Scholarships at Japanese Universities

JASSO

  • The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship is intended for students who have been admitted to study at a Japanese partner university

  • Scholarship amount: JPY 80,000 per month

  • Duration of stay: up to 12 months

MEXT

  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is a Japanese government scholarship for which students may apply through the embassy or their home university.

  • It is intended for one-year stays at selected partner universities beginning in October of the following academic year.

  • Scholarship amount: JPY 117,000 per month
