Strategic Project Management for Researchers

Effective project management is an essential skill for researchers at all career stages. Whether working on a Ph.D. project, preparing grant proposals, coordinating research teams, or joining international collaborations, researchers increasingly need structured approaches to planning, decision-making, and resource management.

This seminar introduces the basics of strategic project management and its connection to broader strategic thinking. Selected examples from practice will show how strategic thinking supports effective project planning and implementation.

An interactive part of the seminar will present the Business Model Canvas as a practical tool for structuring innovative ideas. Participants will explore how to turn project ideas into value propositions, identify key stakeholders and partners, and reflect on the potential impact and application of their work.

Key topics include:

  • Strategic thinking

  • Vision, mission, and goal setting

  • Analysis of the internal and external project environment

  • Project planning, milestones, and resource allocation

  • Basics of financial management in projects

  • Human resources management and team coordination

  • Risk identification and mitigation strategies

  • Using the Business Model Canvas to structure project ideas

The seminar is designed as a practical introduction to strategic project thinking and provides participants with tools and perspectives that can be applied directly to their own projects and future professional activities.
